Sport for All:
Inclusive Youth with Hemsball

SPORTHems is a transnational project that strengthens inclusive youth work through sport. By equipping youth workers with practical methods, training materials, and future digital learning resources, the project helps create more accessible opportunities for disadvantaged young people and young people with disabilities to participate in meaningful, structured, and inclusive sport activities.

At the centre of the project is Hemsball, an adaptable and accessible sport with strong potential for non-formal education, participation, confidence-building, and community inclusion. Through cooperation between organisations in Türkiye, Sweden, Portugal, and Serbia, SPORTHems develops a practical model that can be transferred, improved, and sustained beyond the project lifetime.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

About SPORTHems

SPORTHems was developed in response to a persistent gap in youth work and sport participation. Many young people, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds or living with disabilities, continue to face social, physical, and structural barriers that limit their access to inclusive activities. At the same time, youth workers often need more practical tools and better training to design and facilitate accessible sport-based learning environments.

The project addresses this challenge by using Hemsball as a simple, flexible, and inclusive sport that can be adapted to different needs, contexts, and ability levels. Rather than treating sport only as physical activity, SPORTHems approaches it as a tool for participation, confidence, cooperation, and social inclusion. This makes the methodology particularly relevant for youth work, non-formal education, and community-based engagement.

Through a structured process of development, training, pilot implementation, evaluation, and dissemination, the partnership will produce practical resources that help youth workers transfer inclusive sport methods into their local realities. The long-term goal is clear: to strengthen the quality of youth work while expanding access to meaningful sport participation for young people who are too often left at the margins.

RESULTS

Project Outputs

SPORTHems is designed to produce practical and sustainable outputs that remain useful beyond the formal project period. The project follows a clear logic: develop the methodology, test it in real settings, improve it through feedback, and make the final resources accessible to youth workers, organisations, and communities that want to apply inclusive sport practices in their own work.

Hemsball Training Guide

A comprehensive guide for youth workers and organisations on how to use Hemsball as an inclusive method in youth work. It will combine practical methodology, adaptation strategies, and guidance for different learning and participation needs.

Training Modules for Youth Workers

A structured set of training modules designed to strengthen the competences of youth workers in inclusive sport practice. These modules will combine theory, practical exercises, and concrete methods for real-life implementation.

Pilot Sessions in Partner Countries

The SPORTHems methodology will be tested in local settings through pilot activities in the partner countries. These sessions will involve disadvantaged youth and young people with disabilities, ensuring the model is field-tested and improved through direct feedback.

Evaluation and Improvement Framework

Feedback from youth workers, participants, and partners will be used to validate and refine the methodology. This process will strengthen the quality, accessibility, and usability of the final SPORTHems curriculum and learning materials.

Digital Resources and Public Website

The project website will serve as a central platform for public information, updates, downloadable materials, and future learning content. It will help keep the project visible and ensure that resources remain accessible after the project ends.

GUIDE

Step by Step

Follow the SPORTHEMS methodology through a structured, easy-to-understand learning journey. This section guides you step by step to implement inclusive sport practices in your own environment.

The Step by Step section is designed to transform SPORTHEMS methodology into a clear and practical journey. Instead of complex theory, users are guided through sequential stages that support understanding, application, and real-life implementation.

Each step focuses on a specific part of the process, allowing youth workers, coaches, and practitioners to gradually build their knowledge and skills. The goal is to make inclusive sport practices more accessible, structured, and easy to apply in different contexts.

STATUS

Under Development

The step-by-step learning pathway is currently being finalized and will be available in the next phase of the project.

Planned features:

•Step-based learning structure

•Practical implementation guidance

•Video-supported explanations

•Downloadable tools and templates
